Palliative Care at Home in Udupi

Nurse sitting with an elderly patient at home in Udupi

When an illness can no longer be cured, the aim of care changes to comfort, dignity and time at home with family. Aayan Global arranges palliative care at home in Udupi, Manipal and nearby towns. A GNM or BSc nurse looks after symptoms, medicines and wounds, and a caretaker helps with bathing, feeding and moving. Staff usually start within 24 to 48 hours of the free home assessment.

Aayan has provided home nursing since 2015. Call +91 73495 13467 to talk it through. This page is part of our home nursing services in Udupi.

What Palliative Care at Home Means

Palliative care treats the person, not only the disease. It focuses on relief from pain, breathlessness, nausea and fatigue, on keeping the patient clean and comfortable, and on supporting the family. It can begin at any stage of a serious illness and can run alongside treatment.

Our nurses do not decide treatment. They carry out the plan written by the patient's doctor or palliative care physician, record how the patient is doing and report changes quickly.

What the Nurse and Caretaker Do

Symptom monitoring

Pain, breathlessness, nausea, appetite, sleep and bowel movements are checked and noted daily. The doctor then adjusts medicines using accurate records.

Medicines on schedule

Oral medicines, patches and injections are given at the prescribed times. Injections and syringe-driver tasks are done only by GNM or BSc nurses, inside the doctor's orders.

Wounds and skin care

Dressings, pressure-area care and regular repositioning help keep skin intact in patients who spend most of the day in bed.

Mouth, hygiene and nutrition

Mouth care, bed baths and small, frequent meals or fluids as the patient is able, with the family shown how to continue.

Oxygen, catheters and tubes

Oxygen, urinary catheters and feeding tubes are managed by qualified nurses to hospital protocols.

Company and emotional support

Time spent listening, sitting quietly or praying with the patient is part of care, and relatives are given a chance to rest.

Support for the Family

Families caring for someone at the end of life are often exhausted and uncertain. The nurse explains what to expect in plain language, shows relatives how to help safely and tells them when to call the doctor. Nights are the hardest time for many households, and a night-shift nurse lets the family sleep.

A coordinator stays in touch with the family and can adjust the shifts as the patient's needs change.

Working with Your Doctor and Hospital

Palliative care at home works well when the doctor's instructions are clear. Bring the discharge summary, the latest prescriptions and any written plan from the treating team to the first visit. For patients treated at Kasturba Hospital or KMC Manipal, the nurse follows the hospital's instructions and keeps a log the doctor can read at the next review. If the patient also has cancer, see cancer patient care at home in Udupi; for patients who cannot leave the bed, see bedridden patient care.

Choosing the Right Level of Care

  • Needs personal care and company: a caretaker.
  • Needs routine checks and medicine supervision: an ANM nurse.
  • Has pain needing injections, wounds, a catheter, oxygen or a feeding tube: a GNM nurse.
  • Has unstable vitals, complex infusions or ventilator-level needs: a BSc nurse.

The coordinator recommends the lighter option whenever it is enough. The caretaker vs nurse guide explains the difference.
