Most people want to grow old in their own home, and most families find that harder to support than they expected. Aayan has provided home nursing since 2015, and the Kunjibettu branch sends caretakers and nurses to older people in Udupi and Manipal, from a few hours a day to cover around the clock. It starts with a free home visit, and care typically begins within 24 to 48 hours of that visit.
Care often starts after a hospital stay, for example at Kasturba Hospital or KMC Manipal. The nurse then follows the discharge advice at home and keeps a log the consultant can read at the next visit.

Signs a Parent Needs Help at Home
- Missed or doubled medicines. Pill boxes that do not match the day are an early warning.
- Weight loss or skipped meals. Cooking becomes tiring and eating alone is joyless.
- Falls or near-falls. One fall often leads to another, and recovery gets slower each time.
- Difficulty with bathing or toileting. Hygiene slips quietly when it becomes hard or embarrassing.
- Confusion or forgetfulness. Missed appointments, unpaid bills or wandering need a closer look.
- Low mood or withdrawal. Loneliness affects appetite, sleep and recovery as much as any illness.
Elder Care Services at Home
Daily living support
Help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and moving around, offered in a way that keeps the person as independent as possible.
Medicine and health monitoring
Medicines are laid out and given on time. Blood pressure, sugar and pulse are checked on a schedule and written in the log.
Fall prevention and mobility
Supervised walks, safe transfers and a watchful eye on stairs, bathrooms and night-time trips.
Meals and hydration
Food that suits the diet advised by the doctor, prepared or served with attention to chewing, swallowing and appetite.
Memory and companionship
Conversation, familiar routines, photographs, music and prayer help the person stay oriented and connected.
Follow-through on chronic conditions
Diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and heart disease need daily consistency. The carer keeps the routine going and flags changes to the family.
Making the Home Safer
The coordinator walks through the home at the first visit and points out risks. The usual fixes are inexpensive:
- Non-slip mats in the bathroom and a stool or chair for bathing
- Grab bars near the toilet and bath
- Night lights on the route from bedroom to bathroom
- Clear walkways, with loose rugs and cables removed
- A raised toilet seat or commode chair when sitting and standing are difficult
A Day with an Elder Care Companion
- Morning: vitals, bath, breakfast and morning medicines.
- Late morning: a walk or gentle stretching, then fluids and rest.
- Afternoon: lunch, a nap, conversation or a hobby the person enjoys.
- Evening: tea, a light dinner, evening medicines and preparation for bed.
- Night (if arranged): supervision, help with night-time toileting and quick response to a fall or distress.
When Children Live Away
Many families have sons and daughters working in other cities or countries. A daily log, regular phone updates and a single coordinator to call mean you do not have to wonder what happened today. If something changes, such as a fall, a missed meal or a new symptom, the family hears about it the same day.
Cost of Elderly Care at Home
Most elder care at home is delivered by a caretaker, with a nurse added when medical tasks come up.
| Staff type | 12-hour shift (monthly) | 24-hour shift (monthly) | Live-in (monthly) |
| Caretaker | ₹9,000 – ₹12,000 | ₹14,000 – ₹17,000 | ₹12,000 – ₹15,000 |
| ANM nurse | ₹12,000 – ₹15,000 | ₹17,000 – ₹21,000 | ₹15,000 – ₹19,000 |
GNM and BSc rates and per-visit fees are on the home nurse cost page.
